5 Ways Injuries Occur During The Holidays

Avoid Common Holiday Injuries

Injuries can happen anywhere, anytime. Unfortunately, injuries often happen around the holiday season. Whether you’re hanging Christmas lights or wreaths, preparing a holiday meal or traveling to see loved ones we want you to have a safe and joyful season. Here are 5 ways injuries can occur during the holiday season:

Slip and Falls

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) records over 10,000 fall injuries each year that are directly related to people trying to hang up holiday decorations. Stairs and sidewalks also present a potential risk for slip and falls. Be sure to use sturdy ladders or ask for assistance when decorating and be sure to clear off sidewalks and stairs from snow and ice.

Burns / Fires

Remember to place Christmas trees and other greenery away from fireplaces and radiators. Keep tree stands filled with water at all times. Dried out Christmas trees can be a fire hazard.

Check each strand of lights for frayed ends, broken bulbs, and loose wires. Don’t forget to turn off the lights and blow out candles before bed or if leaving the house.

Car Accidents

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration collects data every year that indicates a rise in car accidents around the holiday season. Contributing factors to the increase in collisions include the large number of drivers visiting family in other cities, intoxicated drivers leaving festive events, and inclement weather creating dangerous driving conditions.

Premises Liability Accidents

Before opening your house to guests this season, be sure to inspect your house and make sure all Christmas décor is properly mounted, rugs are secure, and that doorsteps / decks are clear from moisture and ice.

Food Borne Illnesses and Poisoning

Accidental food poisoning during the holidays is more common than you may think. Seasonal plants like mistletoe, holly berries, and amaryllis are poisonous to both humans and animals. Keep them up high and out of reach of children and pets.
