Family of DC Navy Yard Shooting Victim Files $37.5M Lawsuit

The family of Mary DeLorenzo Knight, who was tragically killed in the Washington Navy Yard mass shooting on Sept. 16, 2013, has filed an administrative claim seeking $37.5 million from the government. Knight’s family filed a legal claim against the Navy and the Department of Veterans Affairs. The claim alleges that these agencies ignored warning signs about the shooter Aaron Alexis’s mental health problems.

The wrongful death lawsuit alleges that the Experts, Inc., the contractor that employed Alexis and a sub-contractor for Hewlett-Packard (HP), had a duty to report his mental issues that that the Navy should not have awarded him a security clearance. According to the claim, the government agencies ignored repeated warning signs that Alexis was delusional and unstable and that the federal government’s negligence contributed to Knight’s death.

Wrongful death claims may provide surviving family members with funds necessary to replace lost financial support, to pay funeral expenses education expenses, and to compensate for the loss of medical, pension, and other benefits. The Cochran Firm, DC, is actively and aggressively investigating claims related to the senseless Navy Yard mass shooting.
