The Washington Bar Association (WBA) and Karen E. Evans, president of the WBA and partner with The Cochran Firm, D.C., celebrated Law Day in 2015 by honoring Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Barbara Arnwine, Executive Director of the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law with the Charles Hamilton Houston Medallion of Merit.  The award was given at the WBA’s annual Law Day Dinner held May 2nd. This years dinner also celebrated the WBA’s 90th anniversary and the 50th anniversary of the 1965 Voting Rights Act.

The annual Law Day Dinner also puts a spotlight on The Washington Bar Association Educational Foundation 2015 Charles Hamilton Houston (CHH) Scholarship Essay Competition winners.  The CHH Scholarship Essay Competition awards monetary scholarships to first and second year law students who submit essays on a given topic.  This year’s topic was a discussion of the burgeoning issue of police brutality in the modern social media age.

The Law Day Dinner is an annual tradition held to celebrate Law Day.  Law Day provides the opportunity to reflect on American legal heritage, the rule of law across the globe, and how human rights and duties help create a foundation of peace and prosperity.  Law Day was created in the 1950’s by the American Bar Association and proclaimed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower to take place on May 1st of every year.

The WBA was founded on the principles of Charles Hamilton Houston, a prominent African-American attorney, former Dean of Howard University, and tireless litigator who helped eliminate Jim Crow Laws.  The Law Day Dinner honors attorneys who uphold Houston’s legal ideals and play a role as leaders in the legal community.  The Cochran Firm, D.C. is proud to have Karen E. Evans serve as the Washington Bar Association’s President and thanks the WBA for its leadership and activity in the legal community.
