A criminal charge is a formal accusation made by a governmental authority alleging that somebody has committed a crime.

Being accused of a crime is a serious matter that can sometimes result in long-term consequences, including jail or prison time, depending on the charges. If you are facing criminal charges, The Cochran Firm can take your case, fight for your rights, and help protect you against injustice and mistreatment.

Overview

First, an arrest will be made following with a police report that is sent to the prosecutor. This report summarizes the events of the arrest and the details of the arrest such as dates, times, location and witnesses. After an arrest has been made, the person will be taken to the police department to be “booked.” Booking entails having your fingerprints made and completing other procedural requirements.

The person will then be held in police custody pending a court hearing, which typically takes place in about 48 hours after the arrest was made. After booking is complete, the person will have the opportunity to contact his or her lawyer. You should talk to a lawyer as soon as you know you’ve been charged. Never plead guilty without getting legal advice first.
